Cloth diaper wipes are miles better than disposables. They clean your child’s bottom, rather than just wiping the bacteria around. The proof is in the lower incidence of diaper rash experienced by babies who use cloth diapers and wipes.
This homemade cloth wipe solution is safe and gentle. It contains natural, organic products. The essential oils have therapeutic benefits, too. Lavender is calming and relaxing, and tea tree is antimicrobial.
Here’s what to do.
1.. Get a wipe warmer. I bought mine for $5 at Baby Trader, a thrift store that only sells baby goods. (My other two favorite San Diego baby thrift stores are Baby Go Round and Cory’s Closet.)
2. Gather the ingredients. This is my favorite recipe, but you can Google “cloth wipe solution” and find plenty of others. (Note: essential oils are a bit pricey. Mine lasted about two years for one child.)
- 2 C. water
- 2 Tbsp. Dr. Bronner’s Lavender Soap (Get a big bottle. You’ll use it up.)
- 2 Tbsp. Olive oil
- 6 drops Lavender essential oil
- 6 drops Tea tree essential oil
- 25 wipes (or fewer, depending on the thickness of your wipes)
3. Put the water in the wipe warmer, add the soap and stir. The soap will help the oils dissipate more easily in the water.
4. Add the olive oil and the essential oils and stir gently.
5. You’ll have to adjust this next step depending on the type of wipes you have. I’m fortunate to have a diaper service paid for by my daughter’s grandparents. So our wipes come from Earthy Baby (formerly San Diego Diaper Service). They are one-ply fleece wipes similar to these.
I grab five wipes at a time (they’re folded in half) and dunk them in the solution.
Be sure they get soaked.
6. Fold them over and gently squeeze out the excess solution. Don’t squeeze hard or wring them out. They should remain pretty wet.
Set the wet wipes aside, and repeat until all of the solution is used up.
7. Unfold the wet wipes and place them back into the wipe warmer.
Plug the warmer in and you’re done.
It’s important to note that these wipes are much wetter than disposable wipes. You should always keep a dry cloth handy to dry your baby’s skin before putting on the clean diaper or a rash could develop.
